GAIA Online 2024 Recap and Session Videos

SensoryCuration3

GAIA 2024 Online Edition was a unique and exciting event that emerged in response to the remarkable growth of the GAIA community. While originally occurring in-person every other year, it’s become clear that we need a space to stay connected, share ideas, and engage in the discussions that inspire us. This special two-day event allowed us to come together virtually, with 33 speakers from 19 countries participating across 10 sessions, creating a rich and diverse program.

Our discussions spanned a wide range of topics, including innovative curatorial practices that invite new sensory experiences beyond the screen, as well as the reverse process—bringing the in-real-life (IRL) experience into the digital realm. With the pandemic now behind us and a return to physical spaces on the horizon, we explored how to translate the immersive, real-world experience into the virtual world, reflecting on how these methods can shape the future.

A key theme of the event was building and maintaining healthy, cohesive, and motivated communities over time. We also incorporated playful, interactive sessions and an ArtGames Showcase, giving us a global tour of new events, communities, and iconic spaces pioneering in the game art field. Additionally, we proudly introduced the printed version of GACK, with exciting hints toward a second edition on the way.

Collaborative thinking was at the forefront as we worked together to identify the best formats for promoting indie and artsy scenes outside of traditional events. A particularly meaningful moment was the introduction of “Palestinian Voices in Games,” a powerful and inclusive addition to the conversation.

We’ll take this opportunity to re-share some resources that were shared during the event:
